Software to install
Having the luxury of a blank hard disk (well almost!) I have been pondering carefully what to install to let my LS800 be the spiral bound notepad I want it to be and help me with my GTD efforts. So far I have the following:
I'm debating whether I should also install TabletPlanner (FranklinCovey PlanPlus) on my LS800, given that both that and my email are handled on my TC1100 ... not sure, needs some more thinking ...
- MicroSoft's own Journal (really can't do without it! - the free viewer can be downloaded here if you don't already know)
- The Snipping Tool PowerToy here
- Mindjet's MindManager V5 http://www.mindjet.com/uk/
- Firefox Browser V2 http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
- EverNote Plus V1.5 http://www.evernote.com/en/

Removing the Tablet Input Panel (TIP) from the task bar
This is an oldie but a goodie and worth repeating every now and again. If you want to free up valuable space on the task bar do the following to remove the TIP form the task bar.
Go to a command prompt and unregister the dll by typing:
Then reboot and the TIP Bar should be gone. Now the only way you can get the TIP to appear is with the hardware button or the shake gesture.
To restore the TIP go to a command prompt and type:
Go to a command prompt and unregister the dll by typing:
regsvr32 /u "c:program filescommon filesmicrosoft sharedinktipband.dll"
Then reboot and the TIP Bar should be gone. Now the only way you can get the TIP to appear is with the hardware button or the shake gesture.

Tiny keyboard
I have as yet never connected a keyboard to my LS800, however if the need ever arises that I need to type quite a longish passage of text, we all know that inking is really not efficient ... this is where this tiny 'noname' USB keyboard I have will be very useful - it only measures (WxHxD) 218x15x103 mm - the keys are of course smaller than normal but OK for quick keyboard sessions ... worth having in my bag of bits and bobs when I travel.

My shiney new LS800 ...
This is what my compact tablet PC is for me ...
Does that mean my TPC will replace paper and pencil?? No, at this point I think no TPC will ever do that. But what I mean is that this TPC is so small and light and has enough battery life that it will be my constant companion. All my GTD lists will be held there, scribbles during meetings, calender, web browsing and ad hoc mind mapping. When you reach for that pencil and paper to jot down an idea etc. this TPC will be there ... the question is, is it up to the job??
So far so good - I have the luxury of having the two TPCs so I am taking my time setting up the LS800 and choosing the software to install with care, as well as figuring out how to best organise the data on the disk (... is there ever the right way of optimally organising your files on the HDD!!?)
More on this later.

GTD??
Getting Things Done by David Allen - more on this here. Many have tried this technique for improving personal productivity and I am almost there ... have just started putting the theory into practice. A few have come up with ways of doing this (basically keeping specific lists) on the PC or Pocket PC/ Palm Pilot - even the Tablet PC - my LS800 is going to be where my to-do lists and tasks will be collated and stored/ retrtieved.

The TC1100 versus the LS800
The TC1100 is a great machine, if only HP got the TC2000 or whatever out - I am a committed slate user so convertible like the TC4200 or TC4400 just don't work. I use the TPC in slate mode for about 80% of the time and so the TC1100 'replacement' has to be a slate. The TC1100 is great in slate mode - sleek, light weight (relatively), robust and has good performance. The thing is though - although it is small - it is not that small. I would like a machine that I can take everywhere with me, that is truly unobtrusive, light weight, good power management, no noisy fan, and good performance ... this is where the LS800 comes in. The reality is that when I do emails and some document preparation etc. I need a keyboard and the TC1100 docked with an external keyboard and extrenal monitor can do that, so I am trying an experiment - the LS800 is going to be my personal productivity tool, it will live by my side all the time and be within arms reach to gather info into and collate .... I am also into putting GTD into practice and tablet pc's will figure largely in this ...

The LS800
Yes, I went ahead and bought the Motion Computing LS800 and what a great little device it is ... more info about the device on Motion's website here or other tablet PC fora such as tabletpcbuzz.com (which has only now just been revived after a long downtime).
After much hunting as to WHERE I could actually buy one in the UK - and then they wonder why the tablet PC doesn't catch on!! - I managed to track down a supplier and I got the version with a View-Anywhere screen, 1GB RAM and 60GB HDD as well as the extended battery and the bump case.
The bump case is a nice touch, but I really want something that protects the screen - so I need to hunt for an A5 sized portfolio to use instead. The extended battery gives tonnes of power and the screen - even if only 800x600 is very clear and crisp and the pen very responsive.
I am still using my TC1100, I have very specific plans and slightly different plans for my LS800, I have an interesting role for that planned - more in another post.

Gosh! A whole year has gone by!!
... since I last posted here! Been busy, Tablet PCs still at the fore, but the work life balance skewed quite a lot to the work side of things in 2006. Hopefully I am more in control now and preparing for an even better 2007!

Which slate do I get next?
As HP will be stopping the TC1100 at the end of the year
I find myself
- for the first time - thinking of what Tablet PC am I going to
get next as I would like to upgrade. A slate or Hybrid system is what I
want so the TC4200 is out of the question. I don't think I can wait for
any future offerings of HP as am in need of a replacement soon.
I will be looking closely at Motion's LS800 and perhaps the Sahara ... of course the problem is (as it has always been) that in the UK it is nigh on impossible to see a tablet pc 'in the flesh' so I will have to carefully assess on-line reviews and personal testimonials and take it from there ...
